Misfuelled on the A19? Safety first, then the drain
A misfuel on the A19? Do not restart the engine. If you are in a live lane, get clear and call 999 first — otherwise a technician drains it where it stands. Call 01293 248666.

Where a misfuel on the A19 happens
This guide covers the A19 seaham, Peterlee and the eastern coast strip.

Why the A19 produces misfuel calls
The eastern A19 corridor carries freight and commuter volume between Wearside and Teesside. As on the rest of the A19, the practical point is that a vehicle stopped on it needs to be got clear before anything else happens.
Durham calls split between motorway traffic at Durham Services and Belmont, a university population that turns over every September, and the former coalfield towns where distances to a main dealer are long.
If it happens on a live carriageway
The order matters here. Safety first — out of the vehicle, behind the barrier — then the police or National Highways if a lane is blocked, and only then a drainer.
- Do not start it — that is the whole thing Everything else on this list is detail. This one line is the difference between a call-out and a pump.
- Leave the vehicle where it stopped Pushing or coasting is still movement, and movement is how contaminated fuel finds the pickup.
- Sort out safety Hazards, and get people out of the vehicle if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
- Call 01293 248666 Answered around the clock. Tell us what went in and whether it ran; you get the full price before a technician sets off.
- The job itself Extract, flush, refill, prime, run up, check. Roughly an hour on a standard vehicle.
- Old fuel away, invoice done Controlled waste, transfer note, registered carrier. Keep the note — it is what protects you.
If it is not safe to work where you are
There are sections of the A19 where draining at the roadside is not sensible — a live lane, a blind bend, no verge. You will be told that on the phone rather than after we arrive, and recovery to somewhere workable is the right answer then.
What actually happens inside the fuel system
Fuel leaves the tank through the lift pump, passes the filter, reaches the high-pressure pump and then the injectors. Petrol in a diesel system strips the lubrication that high-pressure pump depends on, and metal shed by the pump travels downstream into the injectors. That sequence is the whole story: cost depends on whether the engine ran, and for how long, not on how many litres went in.
Durham sits at the centre of a wide rural catchment. Once you are out towards Consett, Crook or the coast, the nearest dealer is a long way off and a mobile drain is comfortably the faster option.

The cost, honestly
People expect the number to depend on the amount of wrong fuel. It barely does. It depends on how far the contaminated fuel travelled through the engine.
| Call-out | From just £89 misfuel callout fee |
|---|---|
| Engine never started | Usually the drain and flush only |
| Engine run briefly | Drain, flush, often a new fuel filter |
| Driven some distance | May need the high-pressure pump or injectors checking — a workshop job |
| When you hear the price | On the phone, before anyone travels |
Questions we get asked
How much does it cost in Durham?
From just £89 misfuel callout fee. The full price for your vehicle is confirmed on the phone before a technician sets off, so there is no surprise when we arrive.
Will it have done damage?
If the engine was never started, damage is unlikely. If it ran, the risk rises with the distance driven — which is exactly why we ask.
Can I just top it up with the right fuel?
No. Dilution does not fix contamination, and driving to a filling station to try it is the mile that turns a drain into a repair.
Can you come to a supermarket forecourt?
Yes, and it is where a good proportion of jobs happen. Tell the cashier a drainer is on the way; they are used to it.
What about a van or a hire car?
Same job. With a hire car, ring the hire company too — some policies cover a misfuel drain and it is worth knowing before you pay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
From 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. Reviewers consistently pick out arrival times and the fact that technicians talk them through what happened rather than just taking the keys.
Where reviews are critical, it is almost always about price. Rather than ignore that: the call-out is From just £89 misfuel callout fee, quoted in full on the phone before travel, and we would rather lose the job on the call than argue about it on the forecourt.
