Can I drive after putting the wrong fuel in?

No. Do not start the engine at all. Every mile driven moves the problem further down the fuel system and up the bill. Call 01293 248666.

What "local" actually means here

It means the number is answered by the people who send technicians to Durham, and that coverage of DH1, DH6, DH7 and the surrounding districts is a dispatch area rather than a marketing claim. It does not mean a building — Wrong Fuel Durham has no premises and never has. Call 01293 248666 and the equipment comes to you.

Can I drive after putting the wrong fuel in? The longer answer

Before the key turns, the wrong fuel is sitting in the tank and nowhere else — that is a drain. Once the engine runs, fuel travels through the lift pump, the filter, the high-pressure pump and the injectors, and each stage it reaches adds cost. Drivers who coast to a stop and call from the forecourt almost always pay the call-out and nothing more. Drivers who try to reach home rarely do.

What actually happens inside the fuel system

Fuel leaves the tank through the lift pump, passes the filter, reaches the high-pressure pump and then the injectors. Petrol in a diesel system strips the lubrication that high-pressure pump depends on, and metal shed by the pump travels downstream into the injectors. That sequence is the whole story: cost depends on whether the engine ran, and for how long, not on how many litres went in.

Durham sits at the centre of a wide rural catchment. Once you are out towards Consett, Crook or the coast, the nearest dealer is a long way off and a mobile drain is comfortably the faster option.

What to do now

  1. Do not start it — that is the whole thing Everything else on this list is detail. This one line is the difference between a call-out and a pump.
  2. Leave the vehicle where it stopped Pushing or coasting is still movement, and movement is how contaminated fuel finds the pickup.
  3. Sort out safety Hazards, and get people out of the vehicle if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  4. Call 01293 248666 Answered around the clock. Tell us what went in and whether it ran; you get the full price before a technician sets off.
  5. The job itself Extract, flush, refill, prime, run up, check. Roughly an hour on a standard vehicle.
  6. Old fuel away, invoice done Controlled waste, transfer note, registered carrier. Keep the note — it is what protects you.

Rated 4.8 out of 5

From 2,190 Trustpilot reviews. Reviewers consistently pick out arrival times and the fact that technicians talk them through what happened rather than just taking the keys.

Where reviews are critical, it is almost always about price. Rather than ignore that: the call-out is From just £89 misfuel callout fee, quoted in full on the phone before travel, and we would rather lose the job on the call than argue about it on the forecourt.
